Retail Industry – An updated overview five months after the Covid-19 outbreak

The Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macao, in collaboration with the French Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, has conducted a survey to understand the impact of COVID-19’s on the Retail business in May 2020. This study aims to evaluate the situation of the Industry in May 2020, three months after the previous survey, by comparing the findings and present a holistic overview of the Retail industry.

The main objectives of the study are:

  • Understand the economic and financial impact of Covid-19 on the Retail Industry after five months of the outbreak;
  • Provide a detailed understanding of the current economic situation and provide help to better support all members of the Italian and French Chambers;
  • Provide the Hong Kong Government and Local Institutions with some useful criteria to evaluate the impact and successfulness of the supportive measures implemented so far.

Survey methodology

The survey was carried out between 22 and 29 May, and it was shared with members and non-members of the Italian and French Chambers of Commerce. The survey aimed to assess the consequences of Covid-19 from a financial and operational point of view by comparing the main company’s results in February, March and April 2020 with the same period in 2019.

Overall, 91 responses were collected and analysed.
